Bulldawg Beach Party and Auction
October 24, 2003
Athens Country Club

Linda Ford and Julie Walters greeted guests
Auctin co-chairs, Linda Ford and Julie Walters greeted guests as they arrived.
Two years ago when the Athens-Oconee Junior Woman’s Club began the We Let The Dawgs Out project, one of the objectives was to create an outdoor museum so that everyone could and would have the opportunity to enjoy works of art. From the professional artist to the novice, our talented local artists shared their gifts with us. They created 36 incredible bulldawgs that are now guarding the streets of Athens and are the darlings of the community. We have seen art collectors admire them, tourists flock to Athens to see them and children delight in being photographed with them.
John Breffle
John Breffle did a fantantasic job as auctioneer for the evening.
Our second objective was to raise money for charity. Each bulldawg has a patron who financially made this exhibit possible. Each artist painted the 4 foot bulldawg that is on display and a 17” “puppy” to auction. We held the auction at the Athens Country Club on Friday, October 24, 2003. What a great success the evening was! We had a huge crowd—bulldawg fans, art patrons and collectors. Some guests came as far away as New York. Everyone feasted on fabulous beach fare-from oysters, to shrimp to grilled steak. As always, Evelyn Dukes and the staff of the Athens Country Club did a fantastic job!
Grapevine
The band, The Grapevine, got the evening started playing everyone's favorite dance tunes.
The evening began with the beach tunes of The Grapevine. They had everyone out of their seat dancing to all their favorite oldies. When not dancing, people bidded on the silent auction items. The production company from the movie “Damn Good Dog” was filming the evening for the movie and they produced a trailer of the movies and a trailer of our dawgs that got the live auction started! What an enormous success the auction was. John Breffle did a fantastic job and the evening raised $73,000!

Dr. Moore and Mrs. Moore with Dawgwood
Dr. Moore and Mrs. Moore were the winning bidders for "Dawg Wood".

A year and half ago when we sat in Mayor Doc Eldridge’s office and told him our vision, he shared in our enthusiasm and was instrumental in the success of this project. What collaboration this project has been. The government supporting the arts. Businesses supporting the arts. Our community supporting the arts. Everyone working together to make Athens an even better city. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen!
